Know Your Body Shape

Have you ever wondered what body shape you are? Body shapes are not very important in the big scheme of things, so this page is more for fun and curiosity. Some people use body shape as a guide to buying clothing and what would suit their figure. It can help to put complimentary outfits together.

Here goes:

The classic body shapes are hourglass, rectangle, triangle, apple and pear shaped. Determining which of the five categories you fall into is as simple as taking the measurements below. You may need some help taking these measurements.

1. Measure from the outer part of one shoulder to the outer part of the other. Make sure the tape is straight across. Write it down.
2. Measure your bust by wrapping the tape around your back and in front over the fullest part of your bust. Make sure the tape is straight and even. Wear a good bra while taking this measurement.
3. Find the most narrow part of your waist. Do not hold it in while taking this measurement.
It will be your secret, no one has to know your measurements.
4. Keep your feet together and wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips. You should be measuring at the widest part, just above your legs.

Hint: Keep a record of your measurements so you won't have to do this again, and it can help to keep track of your figure. You will soon know if your body is going through and changes or weight gain/loss.

Now see which body shape you are..

Most people's body shape falls within 5 types. But a few may fall somewhere in between each.

1. Hour Glass -Your waist is small and your hips and shoulders are the same width.
This is the shape that would have measures like 38-26-38 but can be 36-24-36 and so on.

2. Triangle -This is an upside down triangle. Your shoulders and bust are wider than your hips. Your hips are narrow and you have a small/flat bottom.

3. Rectangle -Your hips, shoulders and bust are, or almost are, the same width.

4. Apple -Your waist is wider than your hips and shoulders. You appear round.

5. Pear-There is curve in your waist. Your shoulders and bust are more narrow than your hips. Your behind is full or round.

In general, being overweight will not change your body shape. If you are a pear shape at 60kgs, you would more than likely still be a pear shape at 90kgs.

What to wear for your bodyshape.

  1. Apple -  You need to dress to draw attention away from your waist and shoulders/arms (wear long sleeves), and draw attention to your bust and neck (e.g. v-necks).
  2. Straight/rectangular - You should pinch your waist in with belts and exaggerate curves to avoid looking lanky or boyish. Go for ruffles and frills to add texture and volume (and femininity) to your figure. Steer clear of baggy jeans and tracky dacks if you don't want to look boyish.
  3. Pear - You should be dressing to make your hips and butt look slimmer. Add long coats or jackets. Wear darker clothes on the bottom half.
  4. Hourglass - If you fall into this body type, you're one of the lucky few, so dress to flatter - not flatten - your beautiful curves.
